Matt Forsgren is an accomplished commercial litigator, white collar criminal defense attorney, and internal investigator with national and international experience.

For over 20 years, he has represented clients in challenging civil, criminal, and administrative proceedings.  An aggressive and skilled courtroom advocate, Matt has tried and arbitrated over 50 civil and criminal cases and conducted numerous evidentiary and injunction hearings in state and federal courts throughout the country. And whether inside or outside the courtroom, Matt works to achieve favorable results by immersing himself in his cases and communicating complex information in a persuasive, comprehensible, and engaging way.

In his commercial litigation practice, Matt represents clients in a variety of high-stakes business disputes. He routinely defends and prosecutes claims of civil fraud and other business torts, including in cases involving Special Litigation Committees. Matt has represented clients in securities-fraud matters, FINRA arbitrations, shareholder-derivative actions, and closely held corporate disputes. He represents parties in cases involving claims of misappropriation of trade secrets and confidential information, as well as matters involving non-compete and non-solicitation agreements. Matt’s civil litigation experience also includes counsel and advocacy in standalone and parallel enforcement proceedings brought by federal and state governmental agencies and self-regulatory organizations. He represents professionals, including attorneys, in disciplinary and licensing proceedings.

In his criminal practice, Matt has obtained numerous acquittals in state and federal court. He has handled cases involving allegations of complex financial fraud and other business crimes. Matt has had notable success in pre-trial proceedings to secure dismissals based on legal challenges, including successful challenges to the constitutionality of criminal legislation. He also has obtained reversals of convictions in appellate courts and has been retained specifically to represent clients in contested sentencing proceedings. Matt’s defense work also has proved valuable in advising and taking action on behalf of corporate and individual victims of financial crimes, such as embezzlement scenarios.

Clients frequently retain Matt to conduct internal investigations in an array of sensitive and challenging circumstances. He has handled domestic and international investigations of matters involving the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, False Claims Act and qui tam matters, import and export practices, political corruption, financial wrongdoing, workplace misconduct, whistleblower, and other sensitive circumstances.

Beyond his practice, he is an engaging public speaker who, in addition to presenting at numerous CLEs on best practices in investigations and related corporate governance issues, serves as an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of St. Thomas School of Law on Investigations. He also devotes considerable time to work on human-rights advocacy in addition to his work on pro bono matters, including serving as a member of the District of Minnesota Criminal Justice Act Panel.

In his spare time, Matt is an avid soccer fan who, along with his four sons, can be found cheering on Minnesota United at the TCF Stadium or, with only one of his sons, unconditionally supporting Liverpool Football Club from afar.
