Minnesota Lawyer has recognized three Greene Espel lawyers—Caitlinrose Fisher, Virginia McCalmont, and David-Wallace-Jackson—as 2019 Attorneys of the Year for their pro bono representation of Aida Al-Kadi in a federal civil rights lawsuit. Ms. Al-Kadi was booked on minor traffic-related charges in Ramsey County in 2013. Despite being a Muslim woman who practices modesty by covering herself, she was forced to remove her hijab (headscarf) in front of men and photographed in violation of her religious beliefs.
After defeating the defendants’ motion for summary judgment in large part and securing the complete exclusion of the defense expert, Greene Espel was able to secure a settlement for Ms. Al-Kadi requiring the County to destroy the booking photo and pay her more than $120,000. The County also agreed to revise its policies regarding religious head coverings and to train its officers in order to prevent infringements of religious liberties in the future.
