Greene Espel PLLP proudly congratulates Laura J. Broomell, CLM, our Chief Operating Officer (COO), who received the Association of Legal Administrator’s 2023 Spirit of the ALA Award. The award speaks to Laura’s groundbreaking work at Greene Espel, her commitment to the ALA, her mentorship to new ALA and ALAMN members, her recruitment of members for leadership roles, and her education of members and business partners regarding their relationships to each other. The Award is not given annually. It is only awarded when there is a truly deserving candidate.
For over 20 years, Laura has served as Greene Espel’s COO—a uniquely demanding position given the firm’s decentralized, democratic structure. Laura is a member of all the firm’s committees and oversees all operational functions. She led the firm through becoming ISO 27001 Certified—a yearlong rigorous process that requires annual renewal. She was also instrumental in the firm’s embrace of alternative, value-based fees, and she is a thought leader in this area, helping Greene Espel to think and work creatively with its clients to structure win-win arrangements. Laura’s commitment to innovation and inclusiveness is unparalleled—her efforts have helped to create an environment built on trust where every voice is encouraged and valued as an essential part of the whole in providing exceptional service and value to clients.
While leading and managing Greene Espel, Laura has also been actively engaged in leading the Association of Legal Administrators (ALA). At the international level, Laura served as the ALA President (2016–2017), the Chair of the Standards Review Committee (2019–2020), Chair of the Certification Committee (2011–2013), a member of the ANC (2009), and as a Region 3 Officer (2006–2008). At the local level, she has volunteered her time for over 30 years on numerous committees and Chapter initiatives, including serving as the Minnesota Chapter President. She also launched the Green Initiatives Committee, the Legal Pricing, Process and Project Management Section, and the CLM Study Group in Minnesota. Proving her commitment to innovation, she promoted and implemented the idea of moving the chapter from a menu-based business partner program to a successful sponsorship program.
Laura was selected as one of Minnesota’s Most Powerful Business Leaders by Minnesota 500 in 2022. She is also a 2020 Women in Business Honoree from the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal. Laura currently sits on the Leadership Advisory Board for The Successful Firm Project.
