Greene Espel Chief Operations Officer Laura Broomell, CLM has been selected by Minnesota Lawyer and Finance & Commerce as a 2024 ICON honoree. The ICON Awards recognize exceptional leaders in both the boardroom and the courtroom, spotlighting individuals who have made significant, lasting contributions to Minnesota’s business and legal communities.
For 25 years, Laura has served as Greene Espel’s COO—a uniquely demanding position given the firm’s decentralized, democratic structure. Laura guides the firm’s decision-making process and ensures that its 26 lawyers and 27 other professionals are working in tandem to grow the quality and impact of the firm’s practice. Laura oversees all of the firm’s operational functions, and she leads and inspires its staff members, ensuring that everyone has what they need to serve clients and handle cutting-edge, bet-the-company litigation and investigations.
Laura led the firm through becoming ISO 27001 Certified—a yearlong rigorous process that requires annual renewal. She was also instrumental in the firm’s embrace of alternative, value-based fees, and she is a thought leader in this area, helping Greene Espel to think and work creatively with its clients to structure win-win arrangements. Laura’s commitment to innovation and inclusiveness is unparalleled—her efforts have helped to create an environment built on trust where every voice is encouraged and valued as an essential part of the whole in providing exceptional service and value to clients.
While leading and managing Greene Espel, Laura has also been actively engaged in leading the Association of Legal Administrators (ALA). At the international level, Laura served on the ALA Board of Directors for five years, including as ALA President in 2016–2017. In addition to her years on the Board, she has held a variety of other leadership positions in ALA. At the local level, she has volunteered her time for over 30 years on numerous committees and Chapter initiatives, including serving as the Minnesota Chapter President. For her incomparable service, Laura received the ALA’s 2023 Spirit of the ALA Award.
Laura was selected as one of Minnesota’s Most Powerful Business Leaders by Minnesota 500 in 2022. She is also a 2020 Women in Business Honoree from the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal.
