Greene Espel’s volunteer work on behalf of local governments was again recognized by the International Municipal Lawyers Association, which granted one of its 2019 Amicus Service Awards for two amicus briefs to the United States Supreme Court filed by Greene Espel attorneys. The award was presented to John M. Baker, counsel on record in both cases. Co-authors of the briefs include Greene Espel attorneys Katherine M. Swenson, Holley C. Horrell, and Virginia R. McCalmont.
Through the award, the association seeks to recognize the lawyers who have been actively involved for and on behalf of local governments and the association, and who have done exemplary work to protect and advance local government interests.
This is the fourth year that John has been a recipient of the award.
John, a founding member of the firm, regularly represents individuals and entities in state and federal appellate courts in Minnesota and beyond. He has made a name for himself as an exceptional brief writer. Other attorneys often request him to seek reversals for their clients on appeal or to protect the results obtained in the trial court. John has presented oral argument on appeal more than 30 times. As a thought-leader on municipal law and constitutional law, John has also written many amicus briefs for IMLA and other associations and organizations on questions of importance to public entities.
